Washing Machine Repairs

Washing machine problems we see across Cape Town

A washing machine rarely fails without warning. Usually it starts with one specific symptom — a drum that won’t spin, a wash that never drains, or a machine that leaks onto the floor partway through a cycle. Knowing which symptom you’re dealing with is the first step to a proper diagnosis.

Common faults

  • Not spinning — often a worn drive belt, a faulty motor carbon brush, or a door interlock that isn’t registering as closed.
  • Not draining — usually a blocked pump filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a failing drain pump.
  • Excessive noise or vibration — worn drum bearings, a loose counterweight, or items caught between the drum and outer tub.
  • Leaking — a split door seal, a cracked detergent drawer housing, or a failing hose connection.
  • Not starting — can point to the door interlock, the control board, or the power supply itself.
  • Door won’t open or lock — a faulty door interlock mechanism, which is a common and usually inexpensive fix.

What we can help with

We assess the machine on site, explain what’s causing the fault in plain terms, and let you know what a repair would involve before any work goes ahead. Most washing machine faults come down to a small number of wearing parts — bearings, seals, pumps, belts, and interlocks — so the majority of faults are genuinely repairable rather than requiring a full replacement.

When repair makes sense

If the drum, motor, and control board are still sound, a repair is usually the more sensible option — particularly on mid-range and higher-end machines. We’ll always tell you honestly if a repair isn’t worth it relative to replacing the machine.

Frequently asked questions

Why has my washing machine stopped spinning?

The most common causes are a worn drive belt, a failing motor, or a door interlock that isn’t detecting the door as closed. We’ll test each of these during the assessment.

Is it worth repairing an old washing machine?

It depends on the fault and the machine. A worn belt or pump is almost always worth fixing. A cracked drum or failed motherboard on an older budget machine may not be. We’ll give you an honest recommendation either way.

Why is my washing machine leaking?

Leaks usually come from a worn door seal, a loose or cracked hose connection, or a damaged detergent drawer housing. The location of the leak tells us a lot before we even open the machine up.
